Tobias Sammet from Edguy live in Valencia

Just a month before the show, Edguy were announced as the opening act for Iron Maiden in Valencia. That was a good oportunity to see this band in 2010.

Edguy have alrady played with Maiden. Just like for Helloween, The Almighty and some other bands, Iron Maiden provided Edguy with some of their first stadium or big arenas shows.

10 years earlier I already saw an Iron Maiden / Edguy concert. It was the first date of the Brave New World World Tour, in Strasbourg, France (other bands playing included Stratovarius and Samael). Now Edguy and Maiden were playing for the Final date of the 2010 The Final Frontier Tour.

Dirk Sauer from Edguy headbanging in Valencia

Edguy came on stage with the song Dead Or Rock, and the first thing to note was that the sound was excellent!
That’s quite rare for an opening band: many times opening bands have a poor sound, but that was not the case tonight.

Tobias Sammet introduced his band with a “Hello Valencia! We are Edguy from Germany, and we ere here to kick your ass!”.

He stated that they were there for two reasons: First because Edguy haven’t played in Spain for a while, and second, because the were opening for “The biggest metal band in the world!”.
He said it, and he’s absolutely right!

Felix Bohnke from Edguy

Edguy's setlist was short, only 6 songs.
But 6 songs that rocked the Spanish audience, who were very excited during Edguy’s set.

During the song Tears Of A Mandrake, Tobias said “Here comes the boring part of the show, the sing along part”.
He asked us to scream, but not only for Edguy, for also for Iron Maiden.
The first time, as the people didn’t scream so loud, he said “Come on, they expected better. They deserved better!”

Dirk Sauer and Jens Ludwig from Edguy live in Valencia

It was clear that the band was really happy to play in Spain, and to open for Iron Maiden.

You could see the smiles on their faces, and the energy of their performance.

Tobias also spoke about the FIFA World cup 2010, where Germany lost against Spain.
He recalled “We killed England, but we sucked at Spain!”.
And the concert of the German band in Spain went on, while waiting for the British band to come.

Felix Bohnke going mad

No doubt that Edguy pleased the audience and it was an excellent choice for an opening band.
I’m sure they gained some new fans, and they promised to come back with a new album the following year.

Well, while waiting for the Avantasia shows in December and the next Edguy concert, it was time for Iron Maiden to take over Valencia's Auditorio Marina Sur!
