This was the first date of the Saxon / Iced Earth Metal Crusade Co-headlining Tour. Usually Saxon play at the Elysée Montmartre in Paris, this was their first concert at the Bataclan. It's a nice theater with a high roof, so next time they bring the Eagle on tour they should play here. |
They were promoting their latest album, Into the Labyrinth, so they started with Batalions of Steel. |
Unlike Iced Earth, Saxon a had a great sound and every intrument could be heard perfectly. The band had a background with four falling swords, and the Saxon logo was pretty everywhere around the stage. |
Biff's voice was in a very good shape, and as usual he was backed by bass player Nibbs Carter who has a lower voice. Always impressive, Doug Scarratt's solos were perfectly played. Paul Quinn also did a great performance, just like drummer Nigel Glocker. An hour aftr the begining of the show, the hymn Crusader was introduced by Biff as "OK Mr Paul Quinn, let's play some 12th Century music". |
It seems like a perfect concert, right? Well, no it wasn't. Saxon's performance was incredible but... it was too short. They played for 1 hour and 15 minutes! This is simply not enough for Saxon! OK, I know they have been around for years, but it's not uncommon to see this band play for two hours. Alright, it's a co-headliner tour with Iced Earth. Well I'm OK with co-headliner tours as long as the bands can do their whole show. I mean, it's co-headliner, not co-opening act... Saxon didn't play a single song from their Wheels Of Steel album. Where are 747 or Motorcycle Man? Or clasics like Dogs Of War or 20 000 feet ? Maybe that's because the infamous curfew of some venues in Paris, or maybe the whole tour will be like this. |
If Saxon had played at least 1 hour and 45 minutes I'd thought "OK that's alright for a co-headlining tour". But an hour 15 minutes really it's too short.
So, Saxon should leave Co-headliner tours to other bands. Or the next time Saxon does a co-headliner tour, well, each band should play longer. Apart from the duration, Saxon's performance was excellent. As usual. Their concerts are always intense and unforgettable. |
