To the Adriatic Coast - Celebrating 3 years together
May 2007 Bosnia Herzegovina : Međjugorje

Next : Croatia >

On the road to Croatia we made a detour to visit Međjugorje. The town is a well known pilgrimage destination, since Virgin Mary is said to have made an apparition to six Herzegovinian Croats in June 1981. The vision has not been recognized as “supernatural” by the Vatican, so the “miracle” has not been recognized by the church. Why? I don’t know, but what I do know is that the town has experienced a rapid tourist development: hotels re built to accommodate the Pilgrims and this once sleepy place is now home dozens of religious and souvenir shops.

We went to one of those souvenir shops to buy a couple of gifts with the image of the Virgin four our families. They were also selling CDs and some soft rock music was playing, so we went to take a look. To our surprise, we found records from Iron Maiden, Megadeth and other metal bands. We bought a “Best Of” Guns N’Roses album and Ozzy Osbourne’s “Bark at the Moon”, two original CDs for a low price, some 6€ if I remember well. That was fun and, let’s say, ironic: buying a CD from the guy who wrote the song “Mr Crowley” and made an album called “Spek Of The Devil” on the same shop that sells Virgin Mary stamped gifts. Definitely, rock is global, and when music is good you can find it everywhere.
